smsGuardian Text Message Fraud Protection

Let smsGuardian® add a new level of fraud protection to your debit card. This "short message service" program will send a text to the device of your choice when transactions meet certain requirements. (Please note that message and data rates may apply.) The number of messages you receive is based on your card usage and you will receive only one message per transaction on your card.

Here's how the system works. When you are enrolled, you will receive a text message each time your debit card is used for:

  • International and out-of-state transactions
  • Fuel purchases
  • Purchases of more than $100
  • 3 or more transactions in 24 hours
  • Online or phone transactions
  • Declined authorizations

You can review the text upon receipt and have up to 12 hours to respond. Of course, in the event that fraud has taken place, it is better if you respond as soon as possible. If you used the card for the transaction in question, there is nothing you need to do. If you did not make the transaction, simply reply to the text message as directed which notifies risk management at smsGuardian®. A fraud case is opened, and you will receive a text advising that your card has been blocked from further use. (Please contact South Atlantic Bank to obtain a new card.)

The "Do-Not-Disturb" feature allows you to receive texts when it is most convenient for you. For example, if you do not wish to receive messages from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., you can set "Do-Not-Disturb" to deliver messages after 6 a.m. Click on the "Preferences" tab to set this function.

This new service is available to our customers for the low cost of $2 per statement period, per device and includes as many cards you need to enroll. You may also enroll up to 10 devices to receive text messages (separate fee applies).

Enrolling is easy! All you need to do is click on the smsGuardian® link, review the Terms and Conditions provided, and enroll your debit card(s).  The $2 monthly fee will be deducted directly from the primary checking account linked to your card.

To cancel or opt out of the service at any time, text the word STOP in reply to an alert or directly to 27576. You may also click here for the smsGuardian® website to unsubscribe (click on the "Devices" tab to delete a device). Your card is not considered unenrolled until ALL devices have been deleted. If the service was used at any time during the statement period in which you opted out, the $2 fee is charged for that period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are there security features in place to protect cardholder information?

A. Full cardholder information is NEVER included in a text. The last four digits of the card number are displayed in the text. The short message service is Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliant.

Q. What happens if I don't reply to a text?

A. If no confirmed response is received within 12 hours, the text message expires and smsGuardian considers the transaction valid. You need to respond to a text only if you did not make the transaction in question.

Q. What will the text message look like? How will I know it's from South Atlantic Bank?

A. The beginning of the text message will feature the initials SAB for South Atlantic Bank. These initials are also known as the bank's short name. The message will also include the last 4 digits of the card used, along with the dollar amount of the transaction.  You need to respond only if you DID NOT make the transaction.  See the sample at right. Reply exactly as directed.

Q. If I send a "NO" response, how long will it take for the card to be blocked from further use?

A. A "NO" response receives the highest priority in the Risk Management/Fraud department and the next available fraud analyst will receive the case and block the card.

Q. Will I receive a renewal notification?

A. A renewal notification will be sent to each device you have enrolled in the service six days prior to the yearly expiration date. Three renewal attempts will be made before the service is set to expire. If you do not respond, the device is removed from smsGuardian at expiration. You can renew for multiple years simply by clicking the renewal button and responding as instructed.  The mobile service providers Sprint, Nextel, Boost, and Virgin require that we remind cardholders every 30 days of their enrollment in smsGuardian. If you use one of these service providers, you will receive a notice every 30 days. The alert message will display as:  "Reminder:  You have subscribed to Guardian transaction alerts for South Atlantic Bank. Message and data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help. Reply STOP to cancel."

Q. If I've set the "Do-Not-Disturb" feature is set from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., when will text messages be delivered?

A. Any messages created during this Do-Not-Disturb timeframe would be delivered starting at 6 a.m. when you are receiving messages.
