South Atlantic Bank to Provide Financial Education to Myrtle Beach High School

Myrtle Beach, SC (May 2010) – South Atlantic Bank has joined forces with Myrtle Beach High School to educate students using the “How To Do your Banking” program by Cemark, Inc.

On May 28th, Myrtle Beach High School will air a broadcast to all their students announcing a joint venture between South Atlantic Bank and the high school this fall. When the new school year rolls around, approximately 1,300 students from Myrtle Beach High School will be educated on the importance of handling their finances at an early age.

Some of the practical lessons outlined in the program are:
• Preparing a budget for life after high school
• How to keep good financial records and protect your identity
• Open, manage and reconcile checking accounts
• The importance of establishing and keeping good credit
• How to apply for a loan

According to the American Bankruptcy Institute, 1 out of 5 of the filings received in 2009 were from individuals under the age of 25. This, along with all the financial turmoil in the world, has prompted officials at South Atlantic Bank to look at their neighbors and see how they can help the students of today avoid the pitfalls many adults went through after they graduated from high school.

“We are extremely excited to be able to provide ‘How To Do Your Banking’ to Myrtle Beach High School,” says Wayne Wicker, Chief Executive Officer of South Atlantic Bank. “This first year we wish to blanket the school with the program, then the following years we will concentrate on one particular grade,” states Wicker.

At least once a quarter, the broadcast class at Myrtle Beach High School will create a public service announcement on a financial subject. This will reinforce lessons given earlier in the school year and keep students up to date on new changes in the banking arena.

As part of this program, South Atlantic Bank has created a Seahawk Club Account for the students, as well as, Seahawk fans and faculty. Those who choose to open an account will receive free checks and a free MasterCard® debit card branded with Myrtle Beach High School’s official logo.
